Taekwondo at 15,000 Feet in Africa on Mt. Kilimanjaro!!!

As you may know, I have been in Africa the past two weeks climb ing Mt. Kilimanjaro.  The climb up the mountain was awesome, very challenging but a climb I will remember a lifetime.

There was a team of 47 guides, cooks, waiters and porters who took our team of 13 people up the mountain.  The Porter's would break down our camp, load it on their heads and run past us while we are hiking and set up the next camp by the time we got there.  They were amazing and I wanted to give back to them so I trained them in Taekwondo.

They have never seen Taekwondo before, let alone any of the motions.  When I taught them, I was blown away by there appreciation and enthusiasm.  I guess they work so hard in the background that they don't get too much recognition for their hard work.  I was super happy to teach them and just wanted to do more.  Take a look at the one minute video of the group doing their final training when we came down the mountain.  Talk about energy!

Weekly Focus: Sparring Week...Bring your gear to class!!!

Next week: Sparring Week

Kick of the Week: Cut Kick

Congratulations to all who graduated this past Friday.  We did get a bit of a late start due to an accident on Taconic Parkway. Thankfully, all of our UMAC families were patient and understanding.  It took Inst Winfield almost a half hour to get from UMAC Briarcliff to Brookside School in Ossining.  A trip that usually takes  five minutes.

It was extra exciting because for the first time we had Briarcliff, Ardsley and Shrub Oak Students graduating together.  Everyone did a great job and the energy was off the charts.  We will be hosting our Graduations at local schools from now on because we have outgrown our school.

March 24th: Tea Ceremony at 6:00pm

This Friday we have our Black Belt Tea Ceremony where our newest Black Belts will receive their belts. All families are welcome and their will be an opportunity for the families to say some words regarding the accomplishment at the end of the ceremony.  There will be a pot luck dinner to follow, please sign up at the front desk with the dish you are bringing to share.
